Housing is a human right.
This November, Berkeley voters will elect Rent Stabilization Board Commissioners to enforce our city’s rent control program and protect tenants from unlawful evictions.
From working as a Housing Policy Justice Director, to serving as a tenants’ rights advocate at Centro Legal de la Raza, to my work in Congresswoman Barbara Lee’s office, I’ve dedicated years of professional service to advocating for fair, affordable, healthy, and just housing.
I have represented tenants fighting against more than a million dollars in illegal rent increases through Oakland’s Rent Adjustment Program. I’m asking for your support to continue to bring my expertise to the table right here in Berkeley. When I was first elected to the Berkeley Rent Board in 2020, I promised to boldly shape and implement meaningful housing policy as an elected official, and I’ve kept my promise. We have worked to put on the ballot the Tenants’ Right to Organize ballot measure. This measure would close loopholes for rent control and just cause protections, enshrine a right to organize, and modernize Berkeley’s rent stabilization ordinance. I will keep fighting until we pass the contents of the ballot measure either through City Council action or petition.
I’m thrilled to announce I’ve been endorsed by the Berkeley Tenants Convention to be part of the Right to Housing Slate. I have also been endorsed by Jovanka Beckles, Adena Ishii, Kate Harrison, as well as other organizations, and I hope I can count on your vote on November 5th!
In solidarity,
Xavier Johnson
